Expeditions

As part of our focus on place-based education, our goal is to get every student out into our community at least once a month!  These expeditions (field trips) bring us to places close to our school and a little further away.  We have walked to nearby parks, open spaces and businesses, traveled to local museums and places of interest, and even had some of our community come to teach us here at school.  Last school year, Trailblazer went on over 50 expeditions!  Some of the highlights were educational tours through Garden of the Gods, a morning of building and learning at Home Depot, a guided hike through Ute Valley Park, a field trip to the History Colorado Museum in Denver, performances at the ENT Center for the Arts, and even an entire school expedition to the Air Force Academy to watch a women’s basketball game!

All of our expeditions are connected to grade-level standards and what our learners are discovering in their classrooms. As we venture out to new places, we ask learners to continually reflect on the connections they make and how they could share their skills and talents with the community.  This allows learners to make real-world connections and develop critical thinking skills as they apply their classroom learning to the world around them.
